Rowell succeed Sturdee as CGS in 1950, and he remained Australia’s top soldier until his retirement in 1954.

Blamey and Rowell prepared I Corps for operations in the Middle East, completing the force's structure and forming a sound relationship with the British army. Rowell soon found that Blamey's dual role as corps commander and commander of the A.I.F. presented problems.
