Seeing him silenced at the height of his powers—he was only 57 when he passed—was a huge blow to the jazz community. One can only imagine how much music he had left in him.

His signature sound is inscribed on recordings with Steely Dan, Billy Joel, the Average White Band, Parliament-Funkadelic, James Taylor, Pat Metheny, Quincy Jones, and even a stint in the ’80s with the Saturday Night Live Band.
