"The Falcon and the Snowman" never steps wrong, but it is best when it deals with the relationship between the two young American spies. The movie was directed by John Schlesinger, an Englishman whose understanding of American characters was most unforgettably demonstrated in "Midnight Cowboy," and I was reminded of Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo from that movie as I watched this one.
Christopher Boyce (Timothy Hutton), a young seminarian, leaves his religious studies and returns to his family home in Rancho Palos Verdes, an affluent peninsula in southern California. He reunites with his friend from childhood, Daulton Lee (Sean Penn). Daulton is a drug smuggler and dealer and is in trouble with the law.

Adapted from the book ‘The Falcon and the Snowman: A True Story of Friendship and Espionage’ by Robert Lindsey, which was published six years earlier, the story concerns Christopher (Timothy Hutton), a disillusioned defence worker, and Andrew (Sean Penn), a drug addict and trafficker, who start to vend confidences about US safety to the Soviet Union in the 1970s.
The film has a faded look, as one watches it today, but still, it is interesting because of the intense performances of the two principals. If you haven't seen it, please don't read any further. Chris and Daulton were two childhood friends that came from upper middle class backgrounds.
