The Technical Difficulties was founded in 2008 by Tom Scott and Gary Brannan as a university radio show at the University of York in York, North Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. The show featured Reverse Trivia, a game where Scott would read answers from the 1984 version of Trivial Pursuit, and the others had to guess what the question was.

The show was first only presented by Soctt and Brannan, and had a rotating cast of other people. Brannan left the show for a time, and Chris Joel joined. Brannan later returned to the show in a Christmas special. Matt Gray joined later on.

The group also had a three-episode television pilot show. They also had a podcast called the Reverse Trivia Podcast, which they used in order to continue their radio show.

Over on Gray and Scott's channel Matt and Tom, The Technical Difficulties have had two main shows, as well as The Experiments, where the team tested three new formats for future shows and did other one-off videos that wouldn't fit the usual structure of the channel. These main shows were:

•Citation Needed (2014 - 2018) - A show where Scott gives the name of a Wikipedia article, and the others have to guess facts about the article.

•Two of These People Are Lying (2018 - 2021) - A show where Scott randomly chooses one of three topics that the others have written down, and has to guess who is telling the truth, and really wrote down the article, by asking for information from each person, who all pretend they picked the article.
