The Wombles are fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures created by Elisabeth Beresford and originally appearing in a series of children's novels from 1968. They live in burrows, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways.
The Wombles were the most successful music act of 1974 in the UK, with albums in the UK charts for more weeks than any other act.  A song called "Wombling U.S.A.", written specifically to break into the American market, was recorded in 1975 but was not released until 2000 when it was included on the cassette version of " I Wish It Could Be a Wombling Merry Christmas Every Day ".
