María Ana Fitzherbert (cuyo nombre de soltera fue María Ana Smythe) nació en Bambridge, Hampshire, el 26 de julio de 1756, siendo la hija mayor de Walter Smythe y de María Ana Errington. His father was fined £10,000 and died in prison, leaving Fitzherbert himself heir to his childless uncle Sir Thomas, a prisoner in the Tower.

It’s not clear how much love there was between the two of them as theirs was more a marriage of necessity than anything else. They were, however, blessed with a little boy. Finally settled with her growing family, things seemed to be looking up.
