Thomas Gainsborough (Sudbury , 14 mei 1727 – Londen, 2 augustus 1788) was een Engelse kunstenaar die voornamelijk bekend is geworden door zijn portretten en landschappen. Met Sir Joshua Reynolds behoorde Gainsborough tot de belangrijkste en succesvolste kunstenaars van de achttiende eeuw.

Con quince años se marcha a estudiar dibujo y grabado a Londres con el grabador francés Hubert François Gravelot. Cursó estudios de pintura y tuvo como maestro a Francis Hayman, pintor de temas históricos.

He painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes.
