Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton GCB (24 August 1758 [1] – 18 June 1815) was a Welsh military officer and colonial administrator who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. According to the historian Alessandro Barbero, Picton was "respected for his courage and feared for his irascible temperament".

Thomas Picton – also known as the Tyrant of Trinidad, or the Blood-Stained Governor – is a controversial figure. Historically he has been hailed a public ‘hero’, but his governance of Trinidad and his treatment of slaves marks him out as a particularly cruel leader.
Thomas Picton is widely regarded as a war hero but also had a reputation for brutality during his governorship of Trinidad, where he enslaved and ordered the torturing of people. It poses the question of whether he should be viewed as a hero or a villain.
