A descendant of the 1st Earl of Strafford, Lord Rockingham was the second son of Thomas Watson-Wentworth, 1st Marquess of Rockingham and Lady Mary Finch, daughter of 7th Earl of Winchilsea, he was brought up at the family lavish home of Wentworth Woodhouse near Rotherham in Yorkshire. He was educated at Westminster School.
