Hird was born on May 28, 1911, in Morecambe, Lancashire, England, into a family that was active in the entertainment industry. Her father, James Henry Hird, handled the operations of a lot of theaters in Morecambe, including the 'Royalty Theatre' and the 'Central Pier.'. Her mother, Jane Mary Mayor, was an actor. They were married in 1904.

Born in Morcambe, Lancs, as the daughter of theatrical parents, Thora Hird first appeared on the stage at the age of eight weeks in the arms of her mother. In 1931 she joined Morcambe Rep. was discovered by Ealing Studios and put under contract.
In 1941 Thora Hird made her big screen debut in the Will Hay film The Black Sheep of Whitehall. She was only needed for two days filming and only appeared for three minutes at the beginning of the film. She played secretary to Hay, who in the film is an incompetent teacher who is mistaken for an economics expert and then kidnapped by wartime spies.
