Their surprise attack on the city of Derna, on “the shores of Tripoli,” helped bring an end to the conflict. In 1942, the Commander of the Marine Corps changed “On the land as on the sea” to the current wording, to reflect the addition of air power. When the U.S. goes to war, the Marines are usually the first troops thrown into battle.
