The Duchy of Württemberg was formed when, at the Diet of Worms, 21 July 1495, Maximilian I, King of the Romans and Holy Roman Emperor, declared the Count of Württemberg (German: Graf von Württemberg), Eberhard V "the Bearded," Duke of Württemberg (German: Herzog von Württemberg). This would be the last elevation to dukedom of the Medieval era.
On 8 January 1480, Ulrich ceded rule of Württemberg-Stuttgart to his oldest son Eberhard. He died the following September 1st at Leonberg during a hunting visit with his nephew Eberhard, future Duke of Württemberg. Christian Ulrich I was the third son of Duke Silvius I Nimrod of Württemberg-Oels from his marriage with Duchess Elisabeth Marie, a daughter of Duke Charles Frederick I Poděbrady, Duke of Oels and Anne Sophie of Saxe-Weimar. Carl Maria Peter Ferdinand Philipp Albrecht Joseph Michael Pius Konrad Robert Ulrich Duke von Württemberg was born in Friedrichshafen am Bodensee, Germany, on 1 August 1936 as second son of Duke Philipp Albrecht and his wife Archduchess Rosa of Austria, Princess of Tuscany. The young duke studied law at the Eberhard Carls University in Tübingen.
