Within community limits, 1,274 inhabitants were counted in 1970, 1,542 in 1987 and 2,006 in 2000. In June 2007, 1,963 people lived in Altendorf. The population growth between 1961 and 1971 amounted to 80% owing to the community's favourable location for transport links and widespread building development.

El nombre de Alta Franconia es la denominación oficial de la región desde el 1 de enero de 1838. Proviene del Ducado de Franconia, del cual la actual Alta Franconia quedaba en la parte oriental. El 1 de julio de 1920, se adhirió el Estado Libre de Coburgo a Baviera, con lo cual la Alta Franconia tomó su forma actual.

The Upper Palatinate is a landscape with low mountains and numerous ponds and lakes in its lowland regions. By contrast with other regions of Germany it is more rural in character and more sparsely settled. It borders (clockwise from the north) on Upper Franconia, the Czech Republic, Lower Bavaria, Upper Bavaria and Middle Franconia .
Heiligenstadt is a small centre with 24 constituent communities ( Gemeindeteile ). Within municipal limits is an area of 77 km 2 making Heiligenstadt the district's third biggest community; however, it belongs to the more thinly populated areas. In all of Heiligenstadt's centres live roughly 3,700 inhabitants.
