Vava Brodsky and Marc Chagall in 1967. Chagall's daughter Ida married art historian Franz Meyer in January 1952, and feeling that her father missed the companionship of a woman in his home, introduced him to Valentina (Vava) Brodsky, a woman from a similar Russian Jewish background, who had run a successful millinery business in London.
Bei dem vorliegenden Werk handelt es sich um ein Porträt von Valentina Brodsky, genannt Vava, Chagalls zweiter Ehefrau. 1944 hatte er nach 29 Ehejahren seine Frau Bella verloren. Als seine Tochter Ida 1952 heiratete und er damit die weibliche Gesellschaft in seinem Leben verlor, stellte Ida ihm ihre Freundin Valentina (Vava) vor.

2 de ago. de 2016 · The complicated path leading to the Chagall & Winnipeg exhibition starts when Valentina “Vava” Brodsky married Chagall in July 1952. Vava, whose portraits had been painted in the 1920s by German Expressionist Walter Gramatté, became good friends with Gramatté’s wife, Sophie-Carmen (“Sonia”), a German composer.
