In Norse mythology, a valkyrie (from Old Norse: valkyrja, lit. 'chooser of the slain') is one of a host of female figures who guide souls of the dead to the god Odin 's hall Valhalla. There, the deceased warriors become einherjar ( Old Norse "single (or once) fighters" [1] ).

Valkyrie, in Norse mythology, any of a group of maidens who served the god Odin and were sent by him to the battlefields to choose the slain who were worthy of a place in Valhalla. Some had the power to cause the death of the warriors they did not favor; others guarded the lives and ships of those dear to them.
