Frank Baum 's 1900 children's fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it was primarily directed by Victor Fleming, who left production to take over the troubled Gone with the Wind.

Fleming came from a wealthy family connected to the merchant bank Robert Fleming & Co., and his father was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Henley from 1910 until his death on the Western Front in 1917.

Fleming had previously worked on the movie, but only as a second-unit director. The Wizard of Oz was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1989.
