Victor McLaglen was a British-American film actor. He was known as a character actor, particularly in Westerns, and made seven films with John Ford and John Wayne. McLaglen won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1935 for his role in The Informer.
Died Nov. 7, 1959 of congestive heart failure in Newport Beach, CA. V ictor McLaglen’s career took him into mining camps, prize rings, vaudeville stages, war trenches and talking pictures. At 14, he enlisted in the British Army. Because of his size and physique, he was recruited as a member of the King’s Life Guards at Windsor Castle.

(Sounds like a young English lad’s dream, until he was found out a short time after and had to exit the Army.) When he was 18, he moved to Canada, became a wrestler and a boxer and toured with circuses, vaudeville and Wild West shows.

Victor Andrew de Bier Everleigh McLaglen (10 December 1886 – 7 November 1959) was a British-American actor and activist. He was known for winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1935 for his role in The Informer .
Off-screen, McLaglen formed a riding and polo club called ‘The Light Horse Brigade’, as well as a precision motorcycle team ‘The Victor McLaglen Motorcycle Corps’. He continued to act into his seventies; his rich and varied life came to an end following a heart attack on 7 November 1959 at Newport Beach California, shortly after appearing in a film directed by his son, Andrew.
