Frederick Barbarossa (December 1122 – 10 June 1190), also known as Frederick I (German: Friedrich I; Italian: Federico I), was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 until his death 35 years later in 1190. He was elected King of Germany in Frankfurt on 4 March 1152 and crowned in Aachen on 9 March 1152.

Frederick I, German Friedrich known as Frederick Barbarossa (“Redbeard”), (born c. 1123—died June 10, 1190, Kingdom of Armenia), Duke of Swabia (1147–90), German king (1152–90), and Holy Roman Emperor (1155–90). He signed the Treaty of Constance (1153), which promised him the imperial crown in return for his allegiance to the papacy.
