Gytha Thorkelsdóttir (c. 997 – c. 1069), also called Githa, was a Danish noblewoman. She was the wife of Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and the mother of King Harold Godwinson and Edith of Wessex, the latter of whom was the queen consort of King Edward the Confessor.

Gytha Torkelsdotter (also called Githa) was the daughter of Torkel Styrbjörnsson (also called Thorkill).[1] In 1019, she married the Anglo-Saxon nobleman Godwin of Wessex, apparently as his second wife (his first wife having been a Danish princess).

After the death of Harold Godwinson, his mother, Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, took refuge in Exeter, which then became the main focus in the West Country of resistance to Norman rule. Gytha had considerable wealth and hoped for the arrival of Harold's three sons, Godwin , Edmund and Magnus , who had gone to Ireland to raise an army. [2]
