Even by the 1950s -- when Gene would have presumably been starting his career -- Walter had no "Power" in Hollywood, and had gone to fat (not that Walter thin was all that much to look at).
Walter Brennan plays the grandfather (he also plays Knobby the old gnome) and he is excellent. The bit players ... actors and actresses who have only small parts in the movie ... are also top-notch. And the special effects do a good job of making the gnomes look like they really are only a foot tall.
