Nacido el 15 de agosto de 1845 en Liverpool, Inglaterra, Walter Crane fue un notable pintor, ilustrador, diseñador, escritor y profesor. Era hijo del retratista y miniaturista Thomas Crane (1808-1859). Su hermana Lucy Crane también fue artista y profesora de arte. De 1859 a 1862 Crane fue aprendiz del grabador William James Linton.
