Sir Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch, KCMG (17 September 1874 – 30 July 1970) was a prominent Australian academic and essayist famous for his intelligence and wit. He was a founding professor of English and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth, Western Australia .

Named for Sir Walter Murdoch (1874-1970), widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest essayists, writers and educators, Murdoch University quickly became home to some of the state's finest students and academics. Born in Scotland in 1874, Murdoch immigrated to Melbourne with his family at the age of ten.
He is considered one of the most popular and widely-read Australian writers of the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Murdoch served as the Chancellor of the University of Western Australia from 1943 to 1948; he was appointed a CMG in 1939 and KCMG in 1964. Perth’s Murdoch University is named after him.

Walter Murdoch, born at Rosehearty, Scotland, was educated at Camberwell Grammar School, Scotch College and the University of Melbourne. After teaching at country and suburban schools he was appointed assistant lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne.
