He held the chair of modern literature at Liverpool (1889–1900) and of English at Glasgow and was appointed Oxford’s first professor of English literature in 1904.

The colony was founded in 1585, but it was visited by a ship in 1590 and the crew found that the colonists had disappeared under unknown circumstances.
