Challenging the Fuehrer over his orders, Model asked who was really in command of the 9th Army, which he now led – Model or Hitler. Hitler let him have his way. Walther Model. Walther Model, the son of a musician, was born in Genthin, Germany, on 24th January, 1891. He joined the German Army and during the First World War he won both classes of the Iron Cross. After the war Model remained in the army and in 1930 was appointed head of the war ministry's technical warfare section.
However, Walther has designed one model only. The so-called Walther automatic shotgun was made between 1921 and 1931 only. Around 5,000 to 6,000 units were made.
