A portion of the proceeds from the Festival are placed into a scholarship fund to aid local young musicians in continuing their educations. Through the 2018 festival, scholarships totaled more than $237,950.

He comes from a family of craftspeople and musicians. Not having much cash income and living in one of the most remote areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains, his family made items mostly for home use.
