Otto von Bismarck naît à Schönhausen, en Prusse, en 1815, dans une famille de nobles prussiens ou Junkers. Il est envoyé dans une école prestigieuse de Berlin, puis fréquente l'université de Göttingen pour y étudier le droit. Élève médiocre, il entre ensuite dans la fonction publique prussienne mais, la trouvant ennuyeuse, il la quitte pour travailler sur les domaines de son père.
