19 de sept. de 2022 · The 9 th and last Duke of Portland (who used his third name, William, or ‘Bill Bentinck’) had also had a long career, first as a diplomat in the 1920-30s (rising to be Ambassador to Poland in 1945), then in business, mostly focusing on repairing links between Britain and German industry.
Their daughter, Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley, was married in 1743 to William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland (1709-1762). As a result of this union, a considerable quantity of the Newcastle/Cavendish papers passed into the Portland, rather than the Newcastle Collection.
William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland KG , styled Viscount Woodstock from 1709 to 1716 and Marquess of Titchfield from 1716 to 1726, was a British peer and politician. William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland was born on 14 April 1738. 1 He was the son of William Bentinck, 2nd Duke of Portland and Lady Margaret Cavendish Harley. 1 He married Lady Dorothy Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, Baroness Clifford, on 8 November 1766. 2 He died on 30 October 1809 at age 71.
Lord William Bentinck was born in London, the second son of the 3rd Duke of Portland. He was educated at Rev. Dr Samuel Goodenough's school in Ealing, before moving on to Westminster School. After completing his education, he embarked on a military career, moving swiftly up the ranks on account of his family's influence and his ability to purchase commissions.
William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck was born on 14 April 1738, the eldest son and third child of the 2nd Duke of Portland and of Margaret Cavendish-Holles-Harley, granddaughter of Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford, a prominent minister under Queen Anne.
Anxious to reward his close friend and supporter, [Hans] William Bentinck, William created him Baron of Cirencester, Viscount Woodstock and Earl of Portland in February 1689. William was succeeded by his son, Henry in 1709, and within seven years Henry had been elevated to the titles Marquess of Titchfield and Duke of Portland.
