He passed away in 1990 and was interred at the traditional burial place of the Dukes of Portland in the churchyard of St Winifred's Church, Holbeck in Nottinghamshire. On his death the Dukedom and Marquessate became extinct, but the Earldom and lesser titles passed to his cousin, Henry Noel Bentinck .
