Bentinck joined Marshal Suwarrof's army in Italy and served with the Austrian forces during the campaigns of 1799 and 1801. In 1803 he became governor of Madras but was recalled after being held responsible for the sepoy mutiny at Velore in July 1806.

In 1734 he married Margaret-Cavendish Harley, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Oxford. She was a great patron of the arts and sciences. He was buried on 8th May 1762 and she on 30th July 1785.
