William Dorsey Pender (1834-1863) was one of the youngest and most promising Confederate generals fighting in the American Civil War. Pender was one of the eight Major Generals from North Carolina. He died on July 18, 1863, as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Gettysburg. The State of North Carolina was proud of this man and his service.
Born William Dorsey Pender in Edgecomb County, North Carolina, he graduated from West Point in 1854, was commissioned an officer in the US Infantry and served in the West Coast. With the start of the Civil War, he resigned from the US Army and was commissioned a Colonel in the Confederate 13th North Carolina Infantry.

William Dorsey Pender was born on February 6, 1834, in Edgecomb City, North Carolina. Pender entered West Point in 1850 at age 16. He graduated in 1854, ranked 19th out of 46 in his class.
