  2. William Dorsey Pender (1834-1863) was one of the youngest and most promising Confederate generals fighting in the American Civil War. Pender was one of the eight Major Generals from North Carolina. He died on July 18, 1863, as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Gettysburg. The State of North Carolina was proud of this man and his service.
