William Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton, KG, PC (24 December 1634 – 18 April 1694), also known as Lord William Douglas and the Earl of Selkirk, was a Scottish nobleman and politician. He was the eldest son of the 1st Marquess of Douglas by his second wife, Lady Mary Gordon, a daughter of the 1st Marquess of Huntly .

Boisterous and fun-loving, William spent his life racing horses, gambling and sailing ... while the Hamilton estates and fortune crumbled around him. William was born on 12 March 1845 at Connaught Place, near Hyde Park, in London.
The 12th duke’s expenditure increased the Hamiltons’ debts to around £1.5 million. William was only saved by a lucky bet on the steeplechase race at the 1867 Grand National. The prize money restored his personal purse for the rest of his tenure as Duke of Hamilton, although it didn’t prevent the sale of many of the Palace’s finest treasures in 1882.

He was the son of William Hamilton, 11th Duke of Hamilton and Princess Marie of Baden, the adoptive granddaughter of Napoleon Bonaparte.
William Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton (1845–1895) Lieutenant Charles George Douglas-Hamilton, 7th Earl of Selkirk (1847–1886), 11th Hussars; Lady Mary Victoria Hamilton (1850–1922), married firstly Albert I, Prince of Monaco, latterly to Prince Tassilo Festetics de Tolna.
