William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland, PC (Ire), FRS (3 April 1745 – 28 May 1814) was a British diplomat and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1793.
Abstract: The distinctive role played by William Eden in the penal reform debate of the late eighteenth century is examined and his emphasis on leniency in the exercise of punishment is identified.
Auckland, William Eden, 1st Baron (1744–1814). Politician and diplomat. A younger son of the well-known Durham family, Eden trained as a lawyer after leaving Oxford. He entered Parliament in 1774 for Woodstock and quickly established himself as a useful man, with a particular interest in economic matters and in penal reform.
