Lord Chamberlain The son of William and Georgiana, Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Cavendish succeeded to the dukedom in 1811. He never married, earning him the epithet the 'Bachelor Duke'. Although he was a Whig grandee and served as Lord Chamberlain to both George IV and William IV, Devonshire's interests were primarily cultural. He was one of Landseer's most important patrons.

Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1827 and 1828 and again between 1830 and 1834.
William George Spencer Cavendish, sixth Duke of Devonshire, only son of William Cavendish, fifth duke of Devonshire, and Georgiana, elder daughter of John Spencer, first earl Spencer, was born in Paris on 21 May 1790. His education was received at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. 1811, and proceeded LL.B. in the following year.
