The Bolling Family. Edith Bolling Wilson’s father, William Holcombe Bolling, was born in 1836 in Bedford County, Virginia. The Bollings of Bedford County were among the aristocracy of Virginia, counting among their relatives and friends many prominent families of the Virginia Commonwealth.
The Racial Integrity Act handled this with a clause known as the Pocahontas Exception. People with 1/16 or less American Indian blood could be considered white. This conveniently includes all descendants of Pocahontas from John Fairfax Bolling (1676–1729) onward.
William Holcombe Bolling and his wife, Sallie White Bolling, are the subjects of these daguerreotype portraits made in the mid-nineteenth century. The Bollings had eleven children, nine of whom lived to adulthood. Their seventh child, Edith, married President Woodrow Wilson in 1915.
