William Kent (1685-1748) rose from humble origins as sign painter. Commissioned by Georges I and II he became one of the most successful and fashionable designers of the period. He was the first British designer to tackle the interior as a whole; extending an architect’s control to every detail of interior decoration, fireplaces and furnishings.
William Kent was an eminent English architect, landscape architect, painter and furniture designer of the early 18th century. He began his career as a painter, and became Principal Painter in Ordinary or court painter, but his real talent was for design in various media.
