Born Violet Keppel, she was the daughter of Alice Keppel, who was married to George Keppel, a son of the 7th Earl of Albemarle. Members of the Keppel family thought her biological father was William Beckett , subsequently 2nd Baron Grimthorpe, a banker and MP for Whitby .

Arnold Joost van Keppel, 1st Earl of Albemarle, KG, and lord of De Voorst in Guelders (Gelderland) (Dutch: [ˈɑrnɔl coːst fɑŋ ˈkɛpəl]; baptised 30 January 1670 – 30 May 1718), was a Dutch military leader who fought for King William III of England and became the first Earl of Albemarle.

Keppel was born to William Keppel, 4th Earl of Albemarle, and Elizabeth Southwell Keppel, daughter of Edward Southwell, 20th Baron de Clifford. He joined the Royal Naval Academy at Portsmouth as a cadet in February 1822, [1] and was appointed a midshipman in the sixth-rate HMS Tweed on the Cape of Good Hope Station . [2]
