William Learned Marcy (December 12, 1786 - July 4, 1857) was the 21st United States Secretary of State, 20th United States Secretary of War, 13th Governor of New York, 8th Comptroller of New York and a Senator of New York.
Biographical History. William Learned Marcy (1786-1857) was an American politician and public figure who served as U.S. Secretary of War under President James K. Polk and U.S. Secretary of State under President Franklin Pierce. 1786. Born in Sturbridge (presently Southbridge), MA. 1808. Graduated from Brown University in Providence, RI.
William Learned Marcy (December 12, 1786 – July 4, 1857) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge who served as U.S. Senator, Governor of New York, U.S. Secretary of War and U.S. Secretary of State. In the latter office, he negotiated the Gadsden Purchase, the last major acquisition of land in the contiguous United States.
