Marshal certainly must have been a smart operator to negotiate the tricky politics of the medieval court, but his loyalty to the kings he swore allegiance to gave him a reputation for steadfastness which helped make his fortune.

William Marshal, 2nd Earl of Pembroke (French: Guillaume le Maréchal) (1190 – 6 April 1231) was a medieval English nobleman and was one of the sureties of Magna Carta. He fought during the First Barons' War and was present at the Battle of Lincoln (1217) alongside his father William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke , who led the English troops in that battle.
When Sir William Marshal died on 14 May 1219, he was the most powerful man in England. As earl of Pembroke, he ruled vast estates stretching across England, Wales and Ireland (including Cartmel, where he founded the Priory in around 1189). He also governed the kingdom as regent on behalf of the eleven-year-old King Henry III (1216-1272).
The History of William Marshal is the earliest surviving biography of a medieval knight - indeed it is the first biography of a layman in the vernacular in European history. Composed in verse in the 1220s just a few years after his death, it is a major primary source not simply for its subject's life but for the exceptionally stormy period he had had to navigate.
