Hace 2 días · Richard honoured his father's promise and in August 1189, at the age of 43, William married the 17-year-old daughter and heiress of Richard de Clare 'Strongbow', Earl of Pembroke, the conqueror of Ireland and Marshal acquired large estates and claims in England, Wales, Normandy and Ireland. The marriage was to produce 10 children.
Yet William Marshal – or William the Marshal – was one of the greatest men ever to have lived and arguably the greatest ever Englishman. Although inexplicably omitted from schoolroom history he has a dozen claims to fame. He unhorsed Richard, the future King Richard I, the Lionheart, in battle and spared his life.
