Hace 3 días · William de Braose, soon after he had obtained his extensive fief in Sussex, appears to have built the church of St. Nicholas at Bramber as a chapel to his castle, and to have founded there a small college of secular canons, under a dean.
Hace 1 día · In 1066 SHERMANBURY was part of the estate that centred on Kingston by Sea, being held then by Azor from Harold and in 1086 by Ralph de Buci from William de Braose. The overlordship of the Braoses and their successors was recorded until 1387; a reference to John Fillol as overlord in 1496 is unexplained.
Hace 3 días · By 1086 it belonged to William de Braose, the overlordship thereafter descending with Bramber rape. In 1086 it was held of William by one Ralph. Ralph of Wiston, who is recorded in the mid 12th century, and his son William of Wiston who occurs locally between 1181 and 1204, were presumably his descendants.
Hace 2 días · The manor of SHIPLEY belonged in 1073 to William de Braose, and in 1086 Fulking was said once to have been part of it. Shipley, however, was not entered separately in Domesday Book, but may there be included in Thakeham. Braose's estate evidently included what were later Knepp manor, Hookland park, and Shipley rectory.
