The eye-popping 1971 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features a tour de force performance by Gene Wilder as chief candymaker—and mischief-stoker—Willy Wonka. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was certainly an unlikely film project for Mel Stuart who specialized in light comedies like If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969), starring Suzanne Pleshette, and I Love My Wife (1970) with Elliott Gould.
