Wilson Cary Nicholas (January 31, 1761 – October 10, 1820) was an American politician who served in the U.S. Senate from 1799 to 1804 and was the 19th Governor of Virginia from 1814 to 1816. Early life Nicholas was born in Williamsburg in the Colony of Virginia on January 31, 1761.

Description. Wilson Cary Nicholas was born January 31, 1761, into a politically powerful family from Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1781, he left William and Mary College to join the Continental Army, in which he commanded George Washington’s lifeguard until it was disbanded in 1783.

He withdrew from the College of William and Mary to join the Revolutionary Army, becoming commanding officer of Washington’s Life Guard until the company disbanded in 1783. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1784 to 1789 and again from 1794 to 1800.
