The new South Shields High School for Boys is opened with 250 boys from the old Boys' High School (in Mowbray Road) and 400 boys from Westoe Higher Grade School (leaving the girls behind to form the new Girls' High School) Headmaster: Mr William Thornton Lucas (from old Boys' High School).
I attended Wyggeston Boys' Grammar School from 1960-1967. When I first started in September 1960, the school was verymuch like it is on this photo. One can clearly see the Great Hall, the science classrooms and the dreadful huts and tuck shop plus the sports pavillion. Happy memories.
Wyggeston Grammar School Following the death of wool merchant William Wyggeston in 1536, his brother Thomas (a trustee) used some of William’s money to establish a grammar school in Leicester. This later became Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys, known today as Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College.
Wyggeston Grammar School for Girls was founded not long after the Victorian boys' school. In 1981 it merged with another girls' grammar school in Leicester, Collegiate Girls' School, and stopped taking in girls at eleven. It instead became a Sixth Form college known as Wyggeston Collegiate Sixth Form College.
First established as a grammar school for boys in 1877, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College (WQEIC) is now a sixth form college located in Leicester, England. After William Wyggeston's death in 1536, his brother Thomas Wyggeston, as a trustee, used part of the money to establish a grammar school in Leicester.
