Akron, City (pop., 2020: 190,469), northeastern Ohio, U.S., on the Cuyahoga River. At 1,200 ft (370 m) above sea level, Akron was named for its “high place” (Greek: acros) on the watershed between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. Laid out in 1825, the town was assured substantial growth by the completion of two canals (1827, 1840).
Akron was chartered as a village in 1836, became the county seat in 1842, and was chartered as a city in 1865. From 79 acres of land donated by descendants of the community’s founder, the Perkins Woods Park first began in 1900.

After being first settled by Miner Spicer in 1810, the city was founded by Simon Perkins and Paul Williams in 1825 along the Little Cuyahoga River at the summit of the developing Ohio and Erie Canal. The name is derived from the Ancient Greek: ἄκρον : ákron signifying a summit or high point.
