The Cretti ’s radiating crevices further express Burri’s experience of the arid landscape of the American Southwest. In the late 1950s and early 60s he developed a fascination with the mud flats of Death Valley, to which he traveled repeatedly over the ensuing three decades.
The Cretti are Alberto Burri’s penultimate series of works, named for their induced craquelure, or fracturing of the paint surface.
Burri drew extensive inspiration for the Cretti series from his visits to Death Valley, the legendarily arid area of California to which he returned on a yearly basis from the late 1960s onwards. Burri expertly re-creates the waterless, cracked ground, even employing earth, mixed with acrylic and glue, to achieve a sense of verisimilitude.
Alberto Burri was born in 1915 to a wine merchant and an elementary school teacher in a small town in the Umbria region of Italy.
