La cinta Harry Potter y el prisionero de Azkaban es actualmente la más taquillera de este director. Cuarón fue sugerido por la misma J. K. Rowling para el trabajo de director ya que a ella le fascinó su película La Princesita , adaptación de uno de sus libros favoritos, que también produjo Warner Brothers.

During the pre-production of the film, Warner Brothers invited Alfonso to direct the third Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)", an offer which he accepted after some consideration. The film would prove to be the greatest box office success of his career.
He gained greater prominence for directing the fantasy film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), the dystopian drama Children of Men (2006), the science fiction drama Gravity (2013), and the semi-autobiographical drama Roma (2018). The later two won him Academy Awards for Best Director.
