Alfred Waterhouse was born in Aigburth, Liverpool, the eldest of the large family of a cotton broker and his wife, both Quakers. His father was Alfred Waterhouse Senior (1798–1873), a cotton broker, and his mother was Mary Waterhouse, née Bevan (1805–1880), of Tottenham, both Quakers. Alfred, first of their eight children, was born on 19 July 1830 when the family was living at Stone Hill, Liverpool.
