Alvarez Kelly is a 1966 American Western film set in the American Civil War directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring William Holden and Richard Widmark. The picture was based on the historic Beefsteak Raid of September 1864 led by Confederate Major General Wade Hampton III .

17 de jun. de 2013 · The story for “Alvarez Kelly” is based on the famous “Beefsteak Raid” that took place September 14th through 17th, 1864. President Lincoln called the raid “the slickest piece of cattle-stealing” he ever heard of, and if this film is even partly true, he’s was absolutely right.

29 de mar. de 2013 · Like The Horse Soldiers, the story was loosely based on a true action, this time the so-called “Beefsteak Raid” of September 14-16, 1864. The two lead performances are good, especially Holden. Widmark’s OK though he’s supposed to be battle weary and it comes across as sour and even bored.
Based on a true Civil War incident, Alvarez Kelly (1966) tells the story of a renegade adventurer (William Holden) - the title character - who delivers a herd of 2500 cattle to Union forces on a Virginia plantation.
