In October 2012, Roth was the co-recipient of the 2012 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, together with Lloyd S. Shapley, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences stated that it awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize jointly to Roth and Shapley "for the theory of stable allocations and the practice of market design."

Es catedrático universitario en Stanford e investiga la teoría de los juegos y la economía experimental, fue laureado con el Premio del Banco de Suecia en Ciencias Económicas en memoria de Alfred Nobel en 2012, conjuntamente con Lloyd Shapley, 1 por la teoría sobre la asignación estable y la práctica del diseño de mercados.
