The Jacksons also became guardians for the children of Revolutionary War general Edward Butler--Caroline, Eliza, Edward and Anthony–as well as for the children of Rachel's brother Samuel Donelson, after Samuel died in 1804, including most prominently Andrew Jackson Donelson (1799-1871), who became protégée, aide, and secretary to Jackson.

87142558. Source citation. Eliza Butler was the daughter of Edward Butler, a Revolutionary War hero, and Isabella Fowler, daughter of a British officer. When their father died in Tennessee in 1803, Eliza and her siblings became the wards of Andrew and Rachel Jackson.
They were also guardians for Andrew Jackson Hutchings, Rachel's orphaned grand nephew, and the orphaned children of a friend, Edward Butler – Caroline, Eliza, Edward, and Anthony – who lived with the Jacksons after their father died.
Rachel Jackson's brother Samuel and the children of Edward and Thomas Butler were his earliest wards. In December 1809, Rachel and Andrew Jackson adopted one of the twin sons of Elizabeth and Severn Donelson, another of Rachel Jackson's brothers. He was christened Andrew Jackson, Jr. After the
